I
’m a big fan of Bravo TV’s Project Runway and can't wait for the new season to start in mid-November. There’s something about putting creative people under pressure that makes for entertaining television. I’m also hooked on Top Chef, but that’s mainly because I’m a foodie. I don’t care much about fashion, but I love this show nonetheless.
What makes Project Runway for me is the calming presence of Tim Gunn, mentor to the contestants, who’s now also co-host of the show “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style” and chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne. When does that man sleep?
Now that he’s much more in the public eye, he has to interact with many more people. He shares a few tips in the Wall Street Journal for how to converse effortlessly: Style Expert Tim Gunn Makes Small Talk
Among the key takeaways?
- Getting over shyness and fear of talking to people is all about acting and practice
- Convey both confidence and interest in other people (in other words, always maintain eye contact)
- Let conversations evolve organically but stay away from controversial topics
- Every word or sentence you exchange with someone extends the relationship
- When you run out of things to talk about, you can always ask, “Who are you wearing?”
