I wanted to share an email I got from Frank S. of Holmdel,
NJ illustrating the importance of experimenting with new ideas even if you are already an expert networker.
"Dear Liz: I want to thank you again for taking the time to share your networking expertise by publishing "102 Secrets" for the world to read. As you know I have enjoyed the booklet and given dozens of copies to friends, clients, colleagues and fellow networkers. Last Wednesday morning before attending a networking event, I reread the booklet over a cup of coffee. I was determined to apply as many of the "secrets" as possible and measure the results.
I left the meeting after making five new connections. I did the follow up you outlined and the very next day my phone rang. Someone I met at the networking event recommended me to one of their clients who needed my services, and has resulted in six new search projects! In addition, the recruiting manager at the CPA firm of one of the other new contacts called me as well. We will now be doing joint search projects on an ongoing basis.
Liz, I am now too busy with the additional new work that your "102 Secrets" have brought me to go to any networking events this week. I guess I should be careful what I wish for. Seriously, your booklet is a must read for any businessperson. The concise nature of the material makes it so easy for busy people to get useful information quickly. When is your next booklet being published?"
Thanks, Frank! My take on this? While your mileage may vary, it never hurts to interrupt your normal pattern and try something new. If you’ve been networking a while, it’s easy to just go through the motions -- another day, another networking event. We plateau. To stop moving sideways and go forward instead, inject a little newness into your networking. Arrive at your next event with fresh energy and focus. Listen to upbeat music, fill your head with new ideas, grab some caffeine, whatever works for you.
